Chapter 17
Valerius's Gaze
Master Valerius, sensing a shift in the city's undercurrents, tightens his grip. Kael feels the scrutiny of authority, the subtle pressure of being watched.
The smoke, a perpetual shroud, seemed to thicken with the setting sun, painting the sky in bruised hues of ochre and grey. Kael, as he often did, found himself on his stone. It was a monument to stillness, a cool, smooth anchor in the churning sea of the city. From here, he could observe, detached, the ebb and flow of life that continued, stubbornly, beneath the pall. He traced the grain of the stone with a calloused finger, a familiar ritual that soothed the gnawing unease that had taken root in him since Elara’s quiet act of defiance.
He remembered her face, the way her eyes had met his for a fleeting second, a silent acknowledgment of something shared, something broken and then, perhaps, mended. It was a tiny spark, easily extinguished, yet it had ignited a fire in Kael, a restless questioning that refused to be silenced. The pronouncements of Master Valerius and his ilk, once a comforting balm, now tasted like ash on his tongue. "Progress," they declared. "Order restored." But Kael saw the hollowed eyes of the vendors, the hurried steps of those avoiding the patrols, the persistent coughs that echoed from the tenements.
Today, a different kind of unease settled upon him. It wasn't the familiar ache of helplessness, but a prickling sensation, like a thousand tiny needles beneath his skin. He felt… observed. The city, usually a sprawling, chaotic organism that paid little heed to one young man on a stone, seemed to be holding its breath. The usual boisterous shouts of street vendors were muted, replaced by a more cautious murmur. The patrols, ever-present, seemed to linger longer, their gazes sweeping across the populace with a new intensity.
