Tomas felt it, a strange flutter in his chest, like a trapped bird trying to beat its way out. It wasn’t the exciting kind of flutter he got when he imagined himself as a knight, sword flashing, saving the day. This was a heavy, dull ache, a shadow that clung to him even under the bright, yet strangely muted, afternoon sun. He kicked a loose pebble, watching it skitter across the dusty lane, wishing it could carry away the unease that had settled in his stomach.

Usually, Tomas was the one chasing butterflies, daring Lina to climb the tallest oak, or inventing elaborate games with Anya. But today, his energy felt sluggish, his usual spark dimmed. He kept glancing towards his grandfather Jonas’s small cottage, a knot tightening in his throat. Jonas, with his bristly grey beard and eyes that could drill holes through stone, was a pillar of the village. He was strong, dependable, and always seemed to know the right thing to do. But lately, even Jonas seemed… different. A little more strained, a little more quiet.

And then there was the other thing. The secret. The one that sat like a cold stone in Tomas’s pocket, even though it wasn’t made of stone at all. It had been years ago, a careless moment, a game of chase that had gone too far. He’d been so small then, so full of a boundless, unthinking energy. He’d stumbled, his hand flying out to steady himself, and his elbow had connected with the small, intricately carved wooden bird that sat on the mantelpiece in Jonas’s parlor. It had been his grandmother’s, a piece of delicate history, and it had shattered into a dozen irreparable pieces. He’d scooped them up, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs, and hidden them away, a silent confession buried deep. He’d never told anyone. Not his parents, not even Lina or Anya. It was his shame, his solitary burden.
