Anya’s small shoulders hunched, a familiar tightness gripping her chest. It wasn't the rumble of distant thunder, nor the unsettling shift in the wind that made her feel this way. It was the air itself, thick with unspoken words and a prickly sort of unease that settled over the village like a damp cloak. She sat by the window, her gaze fixed on the ever-darkening sky, but her mind was a kaleidoscope of worried faces, sharp glances, and the low hum of agitated voices that seemed to seep from the very walls of their little cottage.

Her grandmother, Elzbieta, a woman whose hands had known the feel of countless harvests and the gentle touch of worried children, sat by the hearth, her knitting needles clicking a steady, rhythmic beat. It was usually a comforting sound, a lullaby of normalcy, but today it felt like a frantic heartbeat against the rising tide of Anya’s distress.

“Are you alright, my little wren?” Elzbieta’s voice was soft, like the rustle of dry leaves. She peered over her spectacles, her eyes, the colour of faded forget-me-nots, filled with a familiar warmth.
