The air in the chamber was thick, cloying, with the scent of ancient dust and something else, something sharp and metallic, like the tang of ozone after a lightning strike. Elias Thorne’s breath hitched, a shallow, ragged sound swallowed by the cavernous space. Before him, resting on a pedestal of obsidian that seemed to drink the light, lay the Serpent’s Eye. It pulsed with a faint, internal luminescence, a captured star that hummed with a power that vibrated in his very bones.
