The air in the cavernous warehouse was thick with the scent of brine and forgotten things, the kind of place where shadows clung like damp moss. Elias Thorne moved through it with a practiced silence, his footsteps barely disturbing the layers of dust that coated the concrete floor. Each creak of the metal shelving, each distant clang from the docks, was a note in the symphony of his caution. He’d tracked Seraphina Dubois here, or at least, her most prized collection of thuggish enforcers. They were the gatekeepers, the silent sentinels guarding whatever prize she had secreted away in this forgotten corner of the city.
He’d expected Vance to be a step behind, a shadow mirroring his own, burdened by his ingrained suspicion. But Vance was not behind him. He was not there at all. Elias paused, the silence stretching, suddenly too profound, too empty. A prickle of unease, sharp and unwelcome, traced its way up his spine. Vance was never late. Vance was never not where he was supposed to be. He was a clockwork mechanism of righteousness, wound tight and ticking with unwavering precision.
Then, the sound came. Not a subtle rustle, not a muffled thud, but a roar of a struggle, a symphony of violence erupting from the far end of the warehouse, near the reinforced loading bays. It was a sound Elias recognized with a sickening lurch: Vance. And not just Vance, but Vance engaged in a desperate, protracted fight.
