The air in Mark’s study was thick with the scent of old paper and something else, something metallic and sharp, like the tang of blood that never quite washed away. He sat behind his imposing oak desk, the same one where Alex used to sprawl, all easy charm and careless laughter, a stark contrast to the grim set of Mark’s jaw now. Rain lashed against the windowpanes, mirroring the storm that raged within him, a tempest of grief and a fury that had been simmering for months, threatening to boil over. Detective Harding’s words from their last conversation, a polite but firm interrogation that had felt like a prod into an open wound, echoed in his mind. “We believe the motive… might be connected to the incident with the children, Mr. Davies.”

Incident. Such a sterile word for the gaping chasm that had ripped through their lives. Alex. His supposed friend. The man who had, with a casual swipe of his pen and a chilling disregard for consequences, orchestrated the nightmare that had stolen a piece of their children’s souls, and in doing so, had stolen pieces of theirs. Mark ran a hand over the smooth, cool wood of the desk. Alex had always been the one to push boundaries, to flirt with danger, to believe he was untouchable. He’d been so wrong. And now, Alex was gone, a victim of the very darkness he’d courted.

But victim? The word tasted like ash. Alex had been the architect of their pain. He’d taken their children, his own included, and left them on a desolate street, a pawn in some twisted game of his own making. The fear, the helplessness, the sheer terror of those hours… it was a wound that festered, a constant, throbbing ache. And Alex had walked away from it, seemingly unscathed, while they were left to pick up the shattered pieces of their lives.
