The sterile scent of antiseptic clung to the air in Sarah’s kitchen, a stark contrast to the lingering aroma of burnt toast and spilled coffee that usually defined it. Months had passed since the house had become a crime scene, since the hushed whispers had turned into agonizing screams, and since Alex’s charismatic presence had been extinguished like a faulty bulb. Yet, the quiet that now settled over their gatherings felt heavier, more suffocating than any sound.
Sarah meticulously wiped down the already gleaming countertops, her movements precise, almost robotic. The child-sized rocking chair in the corner, usually occupied by her youngest, sat empty, a silent monument to what had been stolen. Outside, the late afternoon sun cast long, melancholic shadows across the manicured lawn, a perfect reflection of the gloom that had settled permanently in their lives.
Mark sat at the kitchen island, nursing a lukewarm mug of tea. He hadn’t touched the plate of untouched pastries Sarah had painstakingly arranged. His gaze was fixed on the condensation beading on the outside of his mug, as if a profound answer lay etched within its watery trails. The stoicism that had always been his hallmark now seemed less like strength and more like a dam holding back a tidal wave of unspoken grief and, perhaps, something far more volatile.
