Chapter 13
Mark's Calculated Move
Mark makes a bold move, perhaps confronting another friend or attempting to destroy evidence. His pragmatism turns to ruthless determination as he tries to control the narrative.
Mark’s move wasn’t announced. It was a quiet seep, a subtle shift in the suffocating atmosphere that had settled over their lives. The air in Sarah’s living room, usually thick with the scent of brewing coffee and the faint perfume of her lilies, now carried the stale odor of fear and unwashed dishes. Detective Harding had been and gone, leaving behind a trail of pointed questions and a palpable sense of unease. The silence after her departure was heavier, more profound, than any sound.
Sarah sat curled on the sofa, a blanket clutched around her like a shield. Her eyes, usually bright and full of life, were shadowed and distant, fixed on the blank television screen as if it held the answers to questions she dared not voice. Across from her, Emily picked at a loose thread on the armchair, her fingers trembling with a nervous energy that seemed to vibrate through the room. Mark, however, was different. He was a statue in the corner, his jaw tight, his gaze sharp and unnervingly still. He hadn't spoken since Harding left, not a word, but his stillness was more potent than any outburst. It was the stillness of a predator, coiled and ready.
He rose, his movements economical and precise. He didn't announce his intention, didn't ask for anyone's permission. He simply walked towards the study, the room Alex had always favored, the room that now felt like a mausoleum. A shiver traced its way down Sarah’s spine. She knew that look in Mark’s eyes. It was the same look he’d had when he’d first discovered the empty car seat, the same look that had hardened his features into something unrecognizable.
