Laima’s feet sank a little, the rich, dark earth clinging to her worn leather boots. The air here was different, thick and heavy, carrying the scent of damp moss and something else, something ancient and forgotten. This was the swamp, a place whispered about in hushed tones, a place where the solid ground of the world seemed to melt away into a vast, uncertain expanse. She remembered the elders speaking of it, their faces etched with a mixture of fear and respect, a place where one could easily lose their way, not just their path, but their very self.

She took a deep breath, the plum tree’s resilience a quiet hum within her. Her grandmother’s words echoed in her mind, “The swamp does not drown the wise, child. It tests them.” Laima scanned the murky water, its surface rippling with unseen life. It wasn’t a place to rush, not a place for hasty decisions. Each step needed to be measured, deliberate. She looked for the subtle signs, the firmer patches of earth, the resilient reeds that seemed to hold their heads high even in this damp embrace.

The temptation to simply plunge ahead, to get through this dreaded place as quickly as possible, was strong. But Laima resisted. The water looked still in places, inviting a careless stride, but beneath that placid surface, unseen currents could pull a person under. She imagined the deceptive sweetness of those salads, promising nourishment but offering only a fleeting, hollow satisfaction. This swamp offered a different kind of deception, a promise of passage that could lead to endless wandering.
