The air, once crisp with the promise of an approaching storm, now hung heavy and sweet, thick with the scent of something Laima couldn't quite place. It wasn't the honest, earthy smell of the forest floor, nor the clean, sharp scent of pine needles. This was different, a cloying perfume that tickled her nose and made her stomach churn faintly. She’d encountered it before, a whisper on the wind, a fleeting, almost forgotten memory. Brahmanic salads, her grandmother used to call them, though Laima had never actually seen one. They were stories, tales of deceptive delights, of paths that looked easy and inviting but led only to a hollow ache.

Laima paused, her hand resting on the rough bark of an ancient oak. The plum tree, her namesake, her resilient spirit made manifest, had taught her to be wary of the overly sweet. It offered its own bounty, tart and true, needing a bit of effort to enjoy, but its sweetness was earned, honest. These, whatever they were, felt like stolen sweetness, like a lie wrapped in silk. She imagined them piled high, vibrant colors, a feast for the eyes, promising effortless joy, a shortcut to happiness. But her gut, that wise, quiet voice that echoed the wisdom of the earth, warned her. It was the same feeling she got when she looked at the murky depths of the swamp, a sense of something hidden, something that could pull you under if you weren’t careful.

A soft rustling in the undergrowth drew her attention. A young doe, her coat dappled with sunlight, stepped gracefully into a small clearing. Beside her, nestled amongst soft moss, were what Laima could only describe as the Brahmanic salads. They weren't leafy greens as she'd imagined, but small, jewel-like fruits, glowing with an unnatural luminescence. They pulsed with a soft, inviting light, and the air around them hummed with a gentle, almost hypnotic melody. The doe nudged one with her nose, then looked at Laima with wide, innocent eyes, as if inviting her to share.
