The air, thick with the metallic tang of recent rain and the lingering scent of exhaust fumes, did little to cleanse the weariness that clung to him. He stood on the precipice of another dawn, though the sky above offered no promise of warmth or light, only a bruised, indeterminate grey. Stella had been a whisper, a ghost he couldn’t quite grasp, a phantom limb of his past that throbbed with an insistent ache.
