The dust settled, not just on the battlefield of his recent past, but within him. The roar of the confrontation had faded, leaving behind a silence that was both profound and unsettling. He stood, or rather, leaned, against the rough-hewn timber of a barn, the splintered wood a familiar, grounding sensation against his worn jacket. His sunglasses, perpetually glued to his face, offered their usual dim respite from the world, but today, the shadows they cast felt less like a shield and more like a second skin. He understood now why they had hunted him, why his life had become a desperate, solitary race. He had been a pawn, a weapon, a loose end. And Stella… Stella had been the hand that moved him, or perhaps, the hand that had been forced to move him.
