Vaeltharion stood on the precipice of the world, the wind a mournful symphony through the skeletal branches of ancient, petrified trees. Below, the land stretched out, a tapestry of muted greens and grays, a world teetering on the edge of an encroaching twilight. His fingers, usually steady as they coaxed life from barren soil or sculpted light into tangible forms, trembled. The weight of the prophecy, a suffocating shroud, pressed down upon him, heavier than any mountain. He was the balance, the counterpoint to Zelphir’s boundless chaos, and yet, in the quiet corners of his heart, a chilling dread had taken root. The Oracle’s words, laced with a serpent’s venom, echoed relentlessly: *“The Shadow Monarch will rise, and the world will know eternal dusk.”*

He had seen the signs, felt the subtle shifts in the world’s ethereal currents that mirrored the growing unrest within himself. Zelphir, his brother, a storm of shadow and impulse, was a constant, terrifying reminder of the destructive potential that lay dormant, or perhaps not so dormant, within their shared lineage. Zelphir, who craved the release of primal power, who saw the world as a canvas for their unleashed might. And Vaeltharion, who yearned for order, for the gentle unfolding of existence, felt the insidious pull of that same abyss.

A memory flickered, unbidden: the first time their powers had truly manifested, a clash of nascent energies that had scarred the very fabric of the place they’d awoken. Zelphir’s shadow had lashed out, a wild thing seeking to consume, and Vaeltharion’s light, desperate to defend, had flared, blinding and raw. They had been so young then, so oblivious to the cosmic significance of their existence. Now, the Oracle’s cryptic pronouncements had twisted that raw power into a harbinger of doom.
