The air thrummed with a joy that had been absent for too long. Laughter, the sweet, unrestrained sound of a people finally breathing free, cascaded through the newly revived kingdom of Oba. The rain, a generous, life-giving torrent, had washed away the dust of despair and the parched earth drank greedily, promising a harvest that would banish hunger for seasons to come. Torches blazed along the riverbanks, their flickering light dancing on the water’s surface, a mirror to the stars that had finally emerged from behind the storm clouds. Obinna stood beside him, his arm slung casually over Ikena’s shoulders, a gesture of camaraderie that felt increasingly hollow. “A glorious night, isn’t it, Ikena?” Obinna’s voice was smooth, laced with a warmth that seemed to have bloomed with the return of the rains. “The gods have smiled upon Oba. And your gift, Prince, it was a beacon in the darkness. They will never forget this.”
