Kelly’s small hands, still faintly sticky from the strange, luminous fruit she’d snatched on her hasty escape, trembled as she gripped the cool metal of the spaceship’s console. Outside, the inky blackness of space was punctuated by a million pinpricks of light, a breathtaking, terrifying tapestry that stretched out before her. Each star, a distant sun, held the promise of a world, a home, or perhaps another trap. She was free of the whispering forest, free of the looming shadow of the tree that promised an eternity of stillness, but where was she going? The ship, her unlikely savior and captor, hummed with a low, steady thrum, a lullaby of uncertainty.

She traced the cool, smooth surface of a button, her mind replaying the frantic moments of her escape. The Male Guard Alien’s rough, guttural voice, the Female Guard Alien’s silken, deceptive tone, their words echoing in the hollows of her memory: “She will make a fine addition to the Grove of Whispers… a permanent, rooted existence.” The chilling finality of it, the casual cruelty, sent a shiver down her spine that had nothing to do with the ambient temperature of the ship. She’d seen the tree, a colossal, ancient thing whose bark seemed to weep a sap that glowed with an eerie, internal light. She’d felt its pull, a strange, mesmerizing invitation to surrender, to become something beautiful and still. But the image of her mother’s face, a memory so sharp it ached, had been her anchor, her fierce refusal.

She’d run, her small legs pumping like pistons, the alien guards’ surprised shouts fading behind her. She’d scrambled back into the spaceship, the one that had brought her to this bizarre, beautiful, dangerous world. The controls, once a mystery, now felt like a desperate language she was beginning to understand, fueled by sheer will and a primal urge to survive. She’d slammed her hand on a panel, a desperate gamble, and the ship had responded, its engines roaring to life, lifting her away from the forest, away from the tree, away from the fate that had been so carefully laid out for her.
