Chapter 19
Lift Off
With the guards closing in, Kelly manages to activate the spaceship. It roars to life, ascending rapidly, leaving the planet of creation and its sinister guardians behind.
The hum of the alien forest had been a lullaby, a strange, unsettling melody that had accompanied Kelly’s every step. But now, it was a frantic drumbeat, a pulse of dread thrumming beneath her feet. She could hear them, the rustle of leaves, the snap of twigs, the chillingly calm voices growing closer. They were coming for her. The whispers in the woods, the friendly smiles of the female guard, the tantalizing promises of this wondrous planet – it had all been a lie. A carefully woven trap.
Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She squeezed her eyes shut, picturing the spaceship, a silver sliver against the alien sky. It had been her only hope, her accidental escape, and now it was her only chance. She had to reach it. She scrambled through the undergrowth, the strange, luminescent plants brushing against her skin, leaving trails of faint, sparkling dust. Her small legs churned, propelled by a primal fear that dwarfed any homesickness or resentment she’d felt back on Earth. This was real. This was immediate.
The clearing opened before her, and there it was, the spaceship, gleaming under the twin moons like a forgotten jewel. It seemed so small, so vulnerable, yet it held the promise of freedom. She sprinted towards it, her breath catching in ragged gasps. The ramp was still extended, a silent invitation. She didn’t hesitate, her worn sneakers pounding against the metallic surface as she scrambled inside.
