Chapter 18
The Spaceship's Secret
Reaching the spaceship, Kelly discovers controls she didn't notice before. It seems designed for a child, perhaps left intentionally. She frantically tries to understand its functions.
Kelly’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. The forest, which had moments ago seemed like a fantastical playground, now pressed in on her, a tangle of shadows and unfamiliar rustles. She had run, not really knowing where, just away from the unsettling stillness of the house, away from the phantom ache of her mother’s absence, away from the way her father’s smile seemed to belong entirely to someone else. And then, she had found it.
It wasn’t just a strange, metallic pod anymore. Nestled in a clearing, bathed in the otherworldly glow of Lumina’s twin moons, it hummed with a low, resonant energy. It was a spaceship, she realized with a jolt that was both terrifying and exhilarating. And it was sleek, smooth, and strangely inviting, its surface shimmering with an iridescent sheen. Curiosity, a trait that had always warred with her apprehension, tugged at her. She crept closer, her small sneakers crunching on the luminescent moss.
The hatch, which had been a seamless part of the hull, now hissed open, revealing a softly lit interior. It was far more inviting than she’d imagined. Plush, cushioned seats molded to fit a small frame, and a console glowed with a kaleidoscope of gentle lights. It was as if it had been waiting for her, a cozy nook in this alien wilderness. Hesitantly, she stepped inside. The hatch sealed with a soft sigh behind her, plunging her into a world of muted purples and blues.
