Chapter 17
Race Against Time
Kelly bolts from the tree, the guards in hot pursuit. She sprints through the alien landscape, desperately seeking the spaceship that brought her here, her only hope of escape.
Kelly’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. The words, chillingly clear, echoed in her mind: lead her to the tree… become a tree forever. A cold dread, far worse than any fear she’d felt before, seized her. She didn't wait. She didn't think. She ran.
The forest floor, once a tapestry of wonders, now seemed a treacherous maze. Strange, bioluminescent fungi pulsed with an eerie light, casting long, dancing shadows that seemed to stretch and grab at her heels. The air, thick with the sweet, cloying scent of alien blooms, suddenly felt suffocating. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, sent a fresh wave of panic through her. She imagined the guards, their alien forms sleek and menacing, just behind her, their pursuit relentless.
Her breath came in ragged gasps, each one a desperate prayer. She needed to find the spaceship. It was her only chance, her only link to the world she had so impulsively left behind, and the only hope of escaping this beautiful, terrifying trap. She pictured its metallic gleam, its familiar hum, a stark contrast to the organic, living world that now threatened to consume her.
