Kelly’s breath hitched, a tiny, ragged sound swallowed by the rustling leaves of the forest. The words, sharp and cold as shards of ice, still echoed in her mind: “She will become one with the Great Root… forever.” Forever. The word felt like a physical weight pressing down on her chest, stealing the air she desperately needed. She felt a strange resistance building within her, a fierce, unyielding refusal to let their words become her reality. It wasn't just fear; it was a primal surge of will, a desperate clinging to the idea of herself, of Kelly, a girl who missed her mom and hated her dad’s forced smiles.

A tremor, faint at first, then stronger, ran through the massive tree that loomed over her. It wasn’t the wind. It was her. Her silent, internal scream, her absolute refusal to be turned into bark and leaf, was somehow vibrating through the very essence of this place. The tree, which had felt so ancient and inevitable, seemed to falter. A soft, shimmering light, like captured moonlight, pulsed around its base, a stark contrast to the oppressive darkness of its canopy.

The two alien guards, their reptilian eyes narrowed with confusion, exchanged a look. The male guard, his voice a low growl, hissed, “What was that?”
