Chapter 6
Shadows Lengthen
As Alex gets closer to understanding the door, strange events begin: unsettling dreams, inexplicable sounds, and a growing sense of being watched. The woods around the path seem to change.
The air in Alex’s small apartment had begun to feel thick, heavy with a silence that wasn't empty, but rather pregnant with unspoken things. It had been three days since Alex had last ventured down the overgrown path, three days since the weight of the locked door had pressed itself into their thoughts, an insistent, phantom pressure. Sleep offered no respite. The dreams, once fleeting images of tangled roots and moss-covered stone, were now more vivid, more demanding. Alex saw ancient symbols carved into wood that pulsed with a faint, internal light. They heard a melody, a haunting, wordless lament that seemed to seep from the very earth, a tune Alex felt they knew, yet couldn't quite grasp.
During the day, the unease lingered. A persistent feeling of being observed prickled at the back of Alex’s neck, even when alone. Shadows in the periphery of their vision seemed to stretch and writhe, coalescing into vaguely human shapes before dissolving when Alex turned to look. The familiar creaks and groans of the old building Alex lived in, once comforting, now sounded like furtive whispers, like something was trying to communicate, just beyond the edge of understanding.
One afternoon, while poring over a collection of brittle, yellowed newspaper clippings at the local library, a sudden chill swept through the room, despite the late summer heat. The fluorescent lights flickered erratically, casting a pallid glow over the dusty shelves. Alex’s breath hitched. The air grew colder, a tangible frost clinging to Alex’s skin. It felt like standing in a draft from an open crypt. A book, perched precariously on a high shelf directly above Alex’s head, suddenly toppled, landing with a thud mere inches from their feet. It was a thick, leather-bound volume, its title long since faded into illegibility. Alex’s heart hammered against their ribs. Coincidence, they told themselves, a tremor of fear still running through them. But the feeling of being watched intensified, a palpable presence in the otherwise deserted library.
