Alex traced the worn inscription on the brass key, its surface cool and strangely resonant against their fingertips. The weight of it, both literal and metaphorical, pressed down. It wasn’t just a key; it was a question, a challenge, a whispered invitation to a precipice.
Sarah’s voice, sharp and clear as a bell, cut through Alex’s reverie. "Still staring at that thing? You’re going to wear a hole in the metal with your eyeballs."
Alex flinched, the key clattering against a stack of brittle, yellowed newspaper clippings. Sarah stood in the doorway, arms crossed, a familiar smirk playing on her lips. Her journalist’s instinct, honed by years of sniffing out half-truths and outright lies, had always been a stark counterpoint to Alex’s more intuitive, often fanciful, leanings.
