The air in Elias Vance’s study was thick with the scent of aging paper and dust motes dancing in the slivers of afternoon sun that pierced the gloom. Alex stood before him, the weight of the town’s unveiled secret pressing down, a tangible thing that had settled in the quiet space between them. The polished obsidian of the door, now swung wide and revealing not a treasure hoard, but a chamber filled with the silent echoes of a forgotten era, felt like a wound ripped open in the fabric of their shared reality. Alex had expected Elias to be surprised, perhaps even angry, at the transgression. Instead, a profound weariness settled on the old historian’s face, a resignation that spoke of a burden carried for far too long.
“You found it,” Elias stated, his voice a low rumble that barely disturbed the stillness. It wasn’t a question.
Alex nodded, the movement stiff. “We did. Or rather, Sarah and I did. The mechanism… it was your grandfather’s journal, wasn’t it? The one you said was lost.” The accusation hung in the air, sharp and unyielding.
