Detective Miller arrives, and Aunt Carol is taken into custody. The initial shock begins to fade, replaced by the daunting prospect of understanding how this could happen.
The wail of the siren, a mournful cry against the twilight, was the herald of a new kind of silence. It wasn't the oppressive quiet of Aunt Carol's house, but a charged stillness, thick with unspoken questions and the metallic tang of fear. Detective Miller’s car, a dark, hulking shape, idled at the end of the driveway, its headlights slicing through the encroaching dusk like accusing fingers. Leo and Mia, huddled together on the porch steps, watched as two officers, their faces impassive masks, escorted Aunt Carol from the house. She walked with a peculiar, almost regal, stiffness, her eyes fixed on some unseen point beyond the trees, as if already lost in a world no longer her own. There was no struggle, no protest, only a resigned acceptance that felt more chilling than any outburst could have been.
"It's over," Leo whispered, though the words felt hollow, inadequate. He tightened his grip on Mia's hand, her fingers cold and trembling against his. The adrenaline that had propelled them through the terrifying descent into the basement, the frantic dialing of the emergency number, had begun to ebb, leaving behind a gnawing emptiness, a profound sense of disbelief. This was their aunt, the woman who had baked them cookies, who had tucked them into bed on their first night, who had worried about them catching colds. And now, she was being led away, a suspect in a crime too horrific to fully comprehend.
Detective Miller, a man whose presence seemed to fill the space around him, approached them. His uniform was neat, his gaze direct and unnervingly perceptive. He knelt down, bringing himself closer to their level. "Leo, Mia," he said, his voice calm, steady, a stark contrast to the turmoil churning within them. "I'm Detective Miller. I understand you found something… disturbing in the basement."
