Chapter 7
The Call to Justice
Shocked and horrified, Leo and Mia immediately flee the basement and call the police. Their urgent report sets in motion an investigation into Aunt Carol's dark secrets.
The air in the basement was thick, cloying, and heavy with a scent that was both metallic and sickeningly sweet. Leo’s breath hitched, a ragged sound in the suffocating stillness. Mia, her face a pale mask of terror, clung to his arm, her fingers digging into his skin with a desperate strength that belied her slight frame. The beam of Leo’s flashlight, trembling in his hand, danced across the gruesome tableau, illuminating the unimaginable. It wasn't just one. There were… others. Piled, hidden, shrouded in a silence that spoke volumes of unspeakable acts.
"No," Mia whispered, her voice a strangled plea. "No, Leo, this isn't real."
But it was. The stillness was too profound, the shapes too definite. The shadows that had danced and flickered with their imaginations were now solidified into a horrifying reality. Leo felt a cold dread seep into his bones, a primal fear that threatened to paralyze him. His mind, usually so quick to analyze, felt sluggish, overwhelmed by the sheer horror of it all. He squeezed Mia’s hand, a silent promise to protect her, even as he felt utterly exposed and vulnerable.
