A Horrifying Discovery
Descending into the darkness, the cousins are met with a ghastly sight. Bodies are concealed in the basement, confirming their worst fears and sending a wave of terror through them.
The lock, an old, tarnished thing that looked as though it had weathered decades of neglect, yielded with a reluctant groan. Leo twisted the key, a borrowed one from Aunt Carol’s seldom-used gardening shed, and the tumblers clicked, a sound that echoed unnervingly in the sudden hush of the hallway. Mia stood beside him, her breath catching in her throat, her eyes wide and fixed on the dark rectangle of the basement door. The air, thick with the scent of dust and something else, something faintly metallic and cloying, seemed to press in on them, a tangible weight of anticipation and dread.
“You sure about this, Leo?” Mia’s voice was a mere whisper, barely disturbing the heavy silence. Her fingers were clenched so tightly around the worn fabric of her shorts that her knuckles were white. The nightmares had been worse lately, a recurring, suffocating darkness, and the thought of descending into the actual unknown felt like walking directly into one of them.
Leo met her gaze, his own a mixture of grim determination and a flicker of the fear that was undoubtedly gnawing at both of them. “We have to, Mia. We can’t just keep… hearing things. And Aunt Carol… she’s hiding something. Something big.” He’d been meticulously documenting every strange creak, every muffled thump, every scraping sound that had punctuated their nights since their arrival. His journal, tucked away in his duffel bag, was a testament to a growing unease that Aunt Carol’s placid smiles and hurried diversions had done little to quell.
