The Artisan's Doubt
Elias begins to question Elara's motives. Her evasiveness and conflicting stories plant seeds of doubt, making him wonder if she is a partner or a pawn in a larger, more dangerous game.
Elias found himself adrift in a sea of questions, each one a small, sharp shard of glass pricking at the edges of his carefully constructed reality. Elara, with her eyes that held the depth of the Aegean and a smile that could coax secrets from stone, was becoming less of a longed-for echo and more of a disquieting presence. They had spent the morning tracing the faded frescoes in a forgotten corner of Akrotiri, the air thick with the scent of volcanic dust and the ghosts of a civilization long swallowed by the earth. Elara had pointed to a depiction of a winged figure, her voice a hushed reverence, speaking of ancient rites and forgotten gods. But when Elias pressed her, his gaze, usually so direct, now held a flicker of uncertainty, about the symbols etched beneath the figure, her answers were like smoke, curling and dissipating before he could grasp them.
“This symbol,” he’d said, his finger tracing a spiral that seemed to writhe on the ancient plaster, “it’s repeated in the mosaic downstairs. Does it signify a family crest? A guild?”
Elara had turned away, her shoulders tensing almost imperceptibly. “It’s… a sign of protection, Elias. For the navigators. They believed it guided them through storms.” Her voice was smooth, but a trained ear might have detected the faintest tremor, like a perfectly tuned string plucked too hard.
