Elias, his sculptor’s hands itching with a familiar urge to touch, to understand the very stones beneath his feet, moved with a reverence that surprised even himself. Beside him, Elara’s steps were lighter, quicker, her eyes scanning the remarkably preserved frescoes with an intensity that mirrored his own, though for entirely different reasons. They were a stark contrast, the man who found solace in the stillness of his studio and the woman who seemed to thrive in the heart of a storm.

“It’s like stepping back in time,” Elias murmured, tracing the faded outline of a dolphin leaping from a painted wave. The vibrant blues and reds, though muted by the ages, still spoke of a life lived with an almost startling immediacy. “To think, people lived and breathed here, built these homes, loved and lost… all before our history even began.”

Elara, however, was not captivated by the echoes of daily life. Her focus was on the more abstract, the symbols etched into walls, the geometric patterns that seemed to hold a secret language. She pointed to a cluster of markings near a collapsed doorway, her voice hushed, almost reverent. “Look, Elias. These aren’t just decorations. This symbol… it’s repeated. And here, and here.”
