Chapter 15
The Ancient Theatre's Stage
The climax approaches at a dramatic ancient theatre. Elias and Elara face their pursuers, the fate of the legacy hanging precariously in the balance. Elias must choose his path.
The air in the ancient theatre of Thera hung heavy, thick with the scent of wild thyme and the ghosts of countless performances. Elias stood on the weathered stone stage, the setting sun painting the sky in hues of bruised plum and fiery orange. Below him, the rows of seats, carved into the hillside, stretched out like a silent, expectant audience. Beside him, Elara’s hand, cool and steady, rested on his arm. The silver streak in his hair felt like a beacon, drawing the fading light, and he knew, with a certainty that chilled him to the bone, that this was where it would all end.
“Are you sure about this, Elara?” Elias’s voice was a low rumble, barely audible above the whisper of the wind. He scanned the shadows pooling at the edges of the theatre, his sculptor’s eye picking out every uneven stone, every hidden alcove. He felt exposed, a raw nerve laid bare.
Elara squeezed his arm, her gaze fixed on the arched entrance that led from the backstage area. “We have no other choice, Elias. They know we have the scroll. They’ll stop at nothing to get it.” Her voice was calm, too calm, a melody that usually soothed him but now set his teeth on edge. He remembered her true face, the one revealed in the labyrinth of Fira, the one that held a thousand unspoken truths.
