Bree, using her street smarts, tries to get closer to Croft's operation. She overhears a hushed conversation about 'shipments' and 'loose ends' that chills her.

The salt-laced wind whipped August’s hair across her face as she wiped down the gleaming counter of "August's Awesome Scoops." The late afternoon sun, a hazy orb through the boardwalk’s perpetual shimmer, cast long shadows that danced with the laughter and chatter of the dwindling crowd. Bree, perched on a stool by the open doorway, was meticulously polishing a scoop, her brow furrowed in concentration. It had been a quiet afternoon, a welcome respite after the frantic energy of the day, but the quiet was heavy, thick with unspoken anxieties.

The disappearance of Captain Finnigan still hung over the boardwalk like a persistent fog. He was a fixture, a salty old sea dog with a weathered face and a gruff but kindly demeanor, always good for a story and a double scoop of mint chip. His fishing boat, the 'Sea Serpent,' bobbed empty at its usual mooring, a stark symbol of his absence. Then there was Mrs. Gable, the tourist who’d collapsed, her face a ghastly shade of green, after a cone from "Croft's Confections," Silas Croft's newer, slicker ice cream parlor just a few doors down. The whispers had started then, insidious and unsettling, weaving a dark thread through the usual summer tapestry of sun, sand, and sticky fingers.

"Anything?" August asked, her voice barely above a whisper, though they were alone in the shop.
