Chapter 17
Sweet Justice Served
Croft and his accomplices are arrested. The boardwalk businesses are cleared, and the community breathes a sigh of relief, grateful for the brave young investigators.
The air on the boardwalk practically hummed with a nervous energy, a collective holding of breath that had settled over the familiar stretch of sun-bleached wood and salt-laced air. For days, the whispers had been growing, weaving through the calls of the gulls and the distant crash of waves. Now, with the early morning sun casting long, hesitant shadows, the tension was about to break. August stood behind the counter of “The Sweet Spot,” her family’s ice cream shop, her hands still, an unusual state for her. Beside her, Bree, ever the picture of restless readiness, bounced on the balls of her feet, her eyes scanning the growing crowd filtering onto the boardwalk.
The previous night had been a whirlwind, a frantic scramble of hushed phone calls and hushed meetings with Officer Miller. Captain Finnigan, safe and sound, had recounted his harrowing tale of witnessing Croft’s men unloading illicit cargo under the cloak of darkness, his boat too close to the shore for comfort. He’d seen the glint of metal, the furtive exchanges, and the chilling efficiency with which Croft’s associates operated. The evidence they’d gathered, the meticulously documented sales records that didn’t quite add up, the hushed conversations overheard, the peculiar late-night deliveries to Croft’s souvenir shop – it all coalesced into a damning picture.
August glanced at the display case, the vibrant mounds of her family’s creations suddenly seeming less like joyful treats and more like innocent bystanders caught in a storm. Her secret experiments, the lavender-honey and the spicy mango-chili, felt miles away from the grim reality that had unfolded. She’d always seen the boardwalk as a place of simple pleasures, of sticky fingers and sun-kissed smiles. Now, she saw the shadows that lurked beneath the cheerful facade, the greed that could curdle even the sweetest of dreams.
