The air in Master Dubois’ atelier, usually a comforting symphony of rose and sandalwood, felt thick with unspoken anxieties. Antoinette Valois’ shadow stretched long and cold across the Parisian perfume houses, and Elara could practically taste the unease. Whispers, like tiny, sharp thorns, pricked at the edges of conversations. Rumors, spun with Antoinette’s characteristic venom, slithered through the cobbled streets, painting Elara not as a gifted apprentice, but as a thief, a charlatan, a danger to the sacred art of perfumery.
Elara found herself checking the lock on the antique cabinet more often than usual, her fingers tracing the cool, smooth glass of the crimson-blossomed flacon. The scent, the one that tasted of forgotten laughter and whispered truths, was safely hidden, but the threat felt closer than ever.
“They are saying… they are saying you stole the formula, Elara,” Master Dubois said one morning, his voice a low rumble that barely disturbed the quiet of the shop. He was polishing a row of small, amber-colored bottles, his movements slow and deliberate, as if each stroke of the cloth was meant to ward off the encroaching darkness.
