The air in Master Dubois’ atelier was usually a comforting blanket of mingled rose, lavender, and the sharp tang of citrus. Today, however, it felt charged, prickling Elara’s skin with an unfamiliar energy. She had been experimenting with the crimson-blossom-adorned flacon, the one that held the scent of secrets, carefully adding a single drop to a blend of iris and bergamot. It was a blend Master Dubois had deemed too volatile for regular use, a legacy from a time when perfumes held more than just pleasant aromas.

As the delicate mist settled, Elara inhaled, and the world around her dissolved. The familiar wooden shelves laden with vials, the sunlight streaming through the arched window, the comforting presence of Master Dubois humming a tuneless melody at his workbench – it all shimmered and receded like a tide pulling away from the shore.

Instead, she stood on a sun-drenched cobblestone street, the scent of baking bread and something floral, something she couldn’t quite place, filling the air. A small hand, much smaller than her own, clutched a worn wooden doll. Laughter, high and clear, echoed around her, but it wasn’t her own. It was a child’s laughter, light and carefree. Then, a woman’s voice, soft and melodic, called her name. Not Elara. Another name. A name that felt like a whisper on the wind, a forgotten melody.
