The air in the family parlor, once thick with the acrid smoke of argument and the cloying sweetness of manufactured bravado, now hung heavy with a different kind of quiet. It wasn't the peaceful hush of contentment, but the fragile stillness after a storm, where the trees still trembled and the ground was slick with unshed tears. Elara watched Liam from her armchair, her heart a tangled knot of relief and lingering hurt. He sat opposite their parents, his shoulders slumped, his gaze fixed on the polished mahogany of the table between them, as if the answers to his recent follies lay hidden in its grain.

"I... I don't know what to say," Liam began, his voice raspy, devoid of the arrogant swagger that had infected him for days. He swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing. "Except that I'm so, so sorry. For everything." He looked up, his eyes meeting his mother’s, then his father’s. They were red-rimmed, not with anger, but with a deep, weary sadness that Elara felt echo in her own chest. "The things I said, the way I acted... it wasn't me. Not the real me."

Their mother reached out a hand, hesitant, then rested it on Liam’s. Her fingers, usually so warm and firm, trembled slightly. "Oh, Liam," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "We know. We saw... we saw the change. It was like looking at a stranger."
