The air in the garden hung thick and still, heavy with the scent of wilting roses and unspoken accusations. Elara stood beside her parents, her heart a frantic hummingbird against her ribs. Across from them, Anya’s face was a mask of defiance, her eyes darting nervously between the faces that now held such a unified disappointment. Liam, usually so boisterous, was quiet, his gaze fixed on the flagstones, a shadow of his former self.

"Anya," Elara’s mother began, her voice softer than Elara had ever heard it, a gentle plea rather than a reprimand. "Tell us. Tell us what happened."

Anya’s jaw tightened. She took a shaky breath, her knuckles white where she gripped the edge of the stone birdbath. "Nothing happened," she muttered, her voice barely audible. "It’s all a misunderstanding."
