Chapter 8

The Edge of Everything

Lyra and Elias reach the Abyssal Trench and prepare for the Unbinding ritual at moonrise. Morwen appears in multiple forms to undermine their resolve, showing Elias a vision of the Eleanor Grey's final moments and confronting Lyra with the voices of the eleven people her song killed. Lyra nearly falters but finds strength in her bond with Elias. The chapter ends as the tide peaks, the moon reaches fullness, and Lyra steps toward the trench's edge, ready to speak her two words—just as the tenant rises from the deep beneath them.

Dawn came the way it comes at sea—grudgingly, through layers of gray that couldn't decide whether they were fog or cloud or just the sky being generally pessimistic about the whole enterprise of light.

Elias had been awake for an hour already. Possibly two. He'd lost the ability to track time somewhere around three in the morning, when the depth finder had ticked past fifteen hundred feet and the green pulse below the hull had shifted from its steady four-minute rhythm to something faster. The coffee was instant. It tasted like someone had boiled disappointment and added caffeine. Elias drank it anyway, because coffee was one of those rituals that separated people from animals and from whatever he'd been becoming out here alone for seven years.
