Chapter 7
Chapter 7 — The Calculus of Offering
Lyra and Elias sail the Merrow sixty miles south toward the Abyssal Trench, processing the truths revealed by the Codex and growing closer through shared vulnerability. Morwen attacks them at sea with a storm and a vision of Robert Ashford's final moments, attempting to break their resolve. They survive by working together, and Lyra discovers through the Codex that the willing sacrifice required for the Unbinding is not a life but something freely given from the self—her remaining two words. As they approach the trench at nightfall, they prepare for the convergence of moon and tide, understanding now what the ritual will cost and accepting it together.
The ocean, it should be noted, has never been particularly interested in fairness.
This is worth mentioning because as the Merrow chugged southward through water so calm it looked like a sheet of hammered bronze, Elias Thorne stood at the wheel with the expression of a man who knows exactly how temporary tranquility is when a sea witch is involved. He'd seen weather like this before—the kind that lulls you into thinking the universe has decided to cut you some slack, right before it demonstrates that the universe doesn't know what slack is and wouldn't give you any if it did.
Lyra sat on the forward deck, her back against the cabin bulkhead, the Codex resting on her lap like a sleeping cat that might wake up and scratch someone at any moment. Her hands—still bearing the seventeen cuts from the reef, each one cleaned and wrapped by Elias with the careful, efficient movements of a man who'd done this before, though never on someone he cared about, and certainly never on someone whose skin shimmered faintly in direct sunlight in a way that human skin absolutely should not—rested on either side of the mirror-like object. She was watching the horizon. Or rather, she was watching the space where the horizon would be if her mind weren't somewhere else entirely.
