Chapter 6
What the Drowned Remember
Lyra dives into the reef crevice to retrieve the Codex, descending into the green-lit depths while Elias holds the rope above. Inside the crevice, she encounters the tenant—a massive, shapeless guardian of the deep—and discovers the Codex is not a book but a luminous, mirror-like object that forces her to relive the memory Morwen promised would break her: the night her voice killed. She witnesses herself singing at a coastal festival, her siren voice compelling a crowd to walk into the sea, drowning dozens. The Codex reveals she chose silence to stop the killing, and Morwen made that choice permanent. Lyra surfaces shattered but holding the Codex. She writes her final two words—'I CHOSE'—and gives them to Elias. The Codex activates in both their hands, showing Elias his own buried truth: the maritime disaster he blames himself for was caused by Morwen manipulating the fog, not his failure. As dawn breaks, Morwen appears in a column of dark water, promising to reclaim what they've taken and that the real test awaits at the Abyssal Trench.
Dawn arrived at the Whispering Reefs the way most things arrive at sea—gradually, grudgingly, and with a lot of dramatic lighting.
The fog thinned first, pulling back like a curtain that had overslept its cue. Then the sky shifted from black to charcoal to something that might generously be called blue if you were feeling optimistic about the whole concept of daytime. The reefs emerged from the murk in stages: first the tallest spires, their jagged peaks white with barnacles and bird droppings, then the lower shelves and shelves below those, descending into water that transitioned from gray-green to an opaque emerald where the strange light pulsed beneath.
Four minutes. Four minutes. Four minutes.
