Chapter 5

Chapter 5: The Crossing

Lyra and Elias depart Thorne Point at dawn aboard the Merrow, a small vessel Elias has maintained for emergencies. They navigate through Morwen's lingering fog toward the Whispering Reefs, sixty miles offshore. During the voyage, Elias studies Robert Ashford's journal and discovers a more detailed account of the Codex's location and the dangers of the reefs. Lyra practices with the resonance shell, discovering she can produce faint sounds but that each attempt causes pain in her throat. Morwen appears as a manifestation in the water alongside the boat, taunting them with knowledge of their fears and hinting that the Codex is not what they expect. A sudden squall tests their coordination and trust. They survive and reach the outer perimeter of the Whispering Reefs by nightfall, where they witness the green-gold light pulsing from beneath the water and hear what sounds like singing trapped below the surface. The chapter ends with Elias spotting something moving among the reef rocks that is neither fish nor current.

Dawn came the way it comes to people who haven't slept—not as a beginning but as a deadline.

Elias had the Merrow provisioned and ready before the first gray light touched the horizon. Lyra found him at the boat slip on the sheltered side of Thorne Point, coiling rope with the automatic precision of someone who'd done it ten thousand times and could do it ten thousand more without thinking. Which was good, because his face suggested he wasn't doing much thinking about anything pleasant. He had the look of a man who'd made a decision in the dark hours and was now committed to living with it in the daylight.

The Merrow was sixteen feet of fiberglass and stubbornness, old enough to have character but not so old as to be a liability. She had an outboard motor that Elias clearly trusted about as far as he could throw it—which, given his arms, was actually a reasonable distance—and a set of oars that looked well-used. Safety equipment was stowed in waterproof bags. A compass. Charts. Flares. Enough food for three days, which was two more than Elias expected to need and one fewer than Lyra would have preferred.
