The air in the small, rented room was thick with the scent of aging paper and a lingering hint of dried herbs. Queen Elara, her face etched with a weariness that no amount of rest could erase, traced the faded script on a brittle parchment. Beside her, Princess Lyra, her cheeks still pale from her recent affliction but her eyes bright with renewed curiosity, leaned closer. Kaelen, perched on a stool too tall for him, his gaze flitting between the ancient text and the worried lines on his mother’s brow, felt a familiar knot of unease tighten in his stomach. They had been searching for answers, for a reason, for anything that could explain the strangeness that clung to their small, exiled family.
“This is… remarkable,” Queen Elara murmured, her voice hushed as if afraid to disturb the ghosts of the past.
