Chapter 12
Chapter 12: The Breaking Point
Emily's emotional state unravels in juvenile detention. After a minor rule violation, her mother's rabbit keychain is confiscated as punishment, triggering a complete breakdown. The guards restrain her, and she is placed in isolation, where she finally confronts the depth of her grief and guilt.
The days after the trial stretched into a gray, endless ribbon. I went through the motions of detention center life—wake-up, breakfast, chores, school, recreation, lights out—but each motion felt hollow, like I was moving through water. My body was there, but my mind was locked in a loop of replaying the courtroom, my mother's face, the sound of the gavel.
Tanya tried to talk to me. She'd sit next to me in the cafeteria, nudging my tray. "You gotta eat, Emily." I'd push the food around, take a bite, chew without tasting. The other girls in our unit—Jasmine, who was in for shoplifting; Maria, who'd gotten into a fight; Dee, who'd been caught with stolen property—they all watched me with a mix of pity and wariness. I was the quiet one, the one who'd testified in a murder trial. That made me strange, untouchable.
I held the keychain constantly. The pink rabbit with its chipped ear and faded paint. I'd run my thumb over its smooth plastic, feeling the ridges of the tiny key ring. It was the only thing that made me feel close to my mother. In the quiet hours, when the lights were dimmed and the other girls slept, I'd whisper to it. "I'm sorry, Mom. I'm sorry."
