The Trial Begins
Emily testifies at her mother's trial, facing intense cross-examination. She reveals the full truth about Robert Cole's assault and her mother's self-defense. The jury deliberates, returning a verdict of manslaughter. Sarah is sentenced to five years, leaving Emily shattered but resolute.
The morning of the trial, I woke before the buzzer. The faint gray light of dawn crept through the narrow window, casting long shadows across my cell. I lay still, the rabbit keychain cold against my palm, and listened to the rhythm of my own breathing. Today was the day I had been waiting for and dreading in equal measure. Today, my mother’s fate would be decided.
Officer Jackson came for me at seven. I had already dressed in the clothes my aunt had sent—a plain navy blouse and black pants, nothing that would mark me as an inmate. I was to be transported to the courthouse, where I would testify. The thought twisted my stomach into knots.
“You ready?” Jackson asked. Her voice was neutral, but her eyes held something like compassion.
