The morning light was a lie. It crept through the narrow window set high in the wall, a pale rectangle that did not warm the room. I lay on my cot, the thin mattress doing nothing to soften the metal frame beneath me. My eyes were open, had been open for hours, watching the light shift from gray to white to gray again. The rabbit keychain was in my hand, clutched so tightly that the plastic ears had left an imprint on my palm.
A buzzer sounded—a harsh, electric shriek that cut through the silence. The door to my cell slid open with a hydraulic hiss. A guard stood in the hallway, a woman with a tired face and a badge that read "Officer Reeves." She was not unkind, but she was not warm either. She had the look of someone who had seen too many faces come and go.
"Breakfast, Emily. Let's go."
