The Reckoning
After her confession, Emily is taken to a holding cell and later learns her mother's testimony matches her own. Days pass as the legal system grinds forward. Emily faces charges for tampering with evidence, and Sarah is charged with manslaughter despite self-defense claims. At a preliminary hearing, Emily testifies, revealing the assault and the threat her mother faced. The judge releases Sarah on bail but imposes strict conditions. Emily and Sarah are reunited briefly, but the emotional cost is devastating. Emily realizes that the truth has exposed her mother's vulnerability and the fragility of their future, leaving her with a heavier burden than before.
The door clicked shut, and I was alone. The red light on the recorder blinked, a silent accusation. I stared at the chipped paint on the table, the jagged triangle I had memorized over hours of interrogation. The truth had spilled out of me like water from a cracked vessel, and now I sat in the aftermath, waiting.
Minutes passed. Or maybe hours. Time had lost its shape in this room. The fluorescent light hummed its monotonous tune, and the walls seemed to press closer. I thought of my mother. Was she telling her story? Did she know I had confessed? Would she be angry or relieved?
A knock startled me. The door opened, and a uniformed officer stepped in. "Come with me," she said. Her voice was flat, professional. I stood, my legs stiff and shaky. She led me down the corridor, past the flickering light, past the beige walls, past the smell of antiseptic. We stopped at a holding cell. She unlocked the door and gestured for me to enter.
