Dash’s boots, usually a symphony of squeaks and scuffs on the asphalt, now made no sound at all. It was as if he were gliding on greased lightning, a disconcerting sensation for a man whose entire life had been a thrumming, roaring, exhilarating crescendo. The roar of engines, the frantic cheers of the crowd, the very whoosh of the wind – all gone. Replaced by a void so profound it felt like a physical pressure against his eardrums. He’d rounded the final bend, his tires singing their usual song of impending victory, when the world had simply… switched off.

He coasted to a halt, the sleek lines of his ridiculously fast car now stark and silent against the unnaturally still backdrop. The checkered flag, limp and lifeless, hung in the air like a forgotten promise. Dash, known throughout the racing circuit as “The Hurricane” for his tempestuous speed, felt less like a storm and more like a deflated balloon. He fumbled with his helmet, his gloved fingers suddenly clumsy. The usual post-race cacophony – the thumping of his own heart, the panting of exertion, the distant murmur of mechanics – was conspicuously absent. It was a silence so absolute, so alien, it made the hairs on his arms stand on end.

Then, a sound. A clear, bright, utterly normal sound.
