Dash’s boots, usually a thunderclap against the asphalt, made not a whisper as he landed. The shock of it had been enough to make him skid, but the ensuing quiet was a whole new level of bizarre. His heart, usually a frantic drum solo against his ribs, seemed to be performing a delicate ballet. He’d spun around, searching for the source of the sudden sonic void, and there, perched on a overturned oil drum like a king on a throne, was Pip. The boy, bless his little cotton socks, was humming. A jaunty, slightly off-key tune that, in this world of absolute hush, sounded like a full orchestra tuning up for a rock concert.

“You… you can hear yourself?” Dash managed, his voice a raspy croak, feeling utterly ridiculous.

Pip blinked, his eyes wide and innocent. “Of course. Can’t you?”
