Chapter 13
The Fire Subdued
The flames recede, the fire extinguished. The village is saved, thanks to Kito's unexpected bravery and the Performer's trust. The villagers cheer, amazed by the boy they once called foolish.
The roar of the fire, once a terrifying beast, began to soften, its hungry tongue flicking less fiercely. The air, thick with smoke and the acrid smell of burning wood, grew a fraction cooler. Kito, who only moments before had been a whirlwind of desperate action, felt a strange lightness settle upon him. He looked at the Performer, who offered him a tired, proud smile. "You were magnificent, Kito," the Performer said, his voice raspy. "Truly magnificent."
