The air, thick and acrid, clawed at Kito’s throat. Smoke, a monstrous, suffocating shroud, billowed from the heart of the village, swallowing the familiar shapes of homes and stalls. Panic, a frantic bird trapped in his chest, beat its wings against his ribs. He saw the Performer, his usual bright silks now smudged with soot, directing villagers with a voice that, for all its theatrical flair, held a raw, urgent plea. Kito watched, his legs rooted to the spot, the grand adventures he’d so often imagined feeling like distant, impossible dreams. This was no playful chase through sun-dappled meadows; this was a roaring, hungry beast devouring everything they held dear.
Then, he heard it. A steady, resonant cluck, cutting through the chaos like a sliver of moonlight. The Rooster, perched on the splintered remains of a fence post, his feathers ruffled but his gaze unwavering, met Kito’s wide eyes. There was no fear in the old bird’s stare, only a calm certainty that jolted Kito more than any shout or panicked cry. It was the same look the Rooster had given him after his last foolish escapade, a look that said, "I know you, and I know what you are capable of, even if you don't."
"The fire," the Performer called out, his voice strained, "it spreads too fast! We need more water, more hands!"
