Chapter 15
The Price of Freedom
Althea reaches the artifact. To claim it, she must make her sacrifice: a part of her own life force, her memories, or her connection to the mortal world.
The air in the cavern was thick with the scent of salt and something ancient, something that prickled Althea’s skin with a mixture of awe and trepidation. She had followed the winding path, guided by the faint, ethereal glow that emanated from the heart of the mountain, a path Cris had revealed to her in hushed, urgent whispers. Each step had been a testament to her resolve, a silent promise to the man she loved, to the god she was only just beginning to understand. The weight of her kingdom, of her royal lineage, of the fate of a man who was both mortal and divine, pressed down on her, a tangible force in the echoing darkness.
The cavern opened into a vast chamber, its ceiling lost in shadow, its floor a mosaic of polished obsidian that reflected the strange, bioluminescent light. In the center of this otherworldly space, resting on a pedestal carved from coral that pulsed with a soft, inner luminescence, was the artifact. It was not a jewel, nor a weapon, but a sphere of swirling, opalescent mist, contained within a cage of interwoven silver that seemed to writhe with a life of its own. Within the mist, Althea could discern fleeting images: the crest of a wave, the glint of a sunbeam on water, the silent dance of a leviathan. It was the Heart of the Tides, the artifact whispered of in ancient lore, the key to breaking Cris’s curse.
She approached it slowly, her heart a frantic drum against her ribs. Cris was nowhere to be seen, his presence a phantom comfort, a silent sentinel watching from some unseen vantage point. He had told her to go alone, that this trial was hers alone to face. The words of the Oracle echoed in her mind: *“The Heart demands a price, a sacrifice of self, a severing of what binds.”* What did it mean? What could she possibly offer that would be worthy of freeing an Ocean God?
