The chamber, usually a sanctuary of silks and soft candlelight, now felt like a tomb. Althea traced the intricate embroidery on her gown, the threads cool and unyielding beneath her fingertips. The Oracle’s words, delivered with a voice like crashing waves and sighing winds, echoed in the quiet space: *“The ocean’s heart, though bound by stone, demands a sacrifice of flesh and bone. To break the curse, a love must bleed, a future sown from deepest need.”*

She understood. Oh, how she understood. The artifact, the shattered pearl radiating an ethereal glow, had been presented to her, nestled in the Oracle’s gnarled hands. It pulsed with a power that Althea felt resonate deep within her, a hum that mirrored the longing she’d always felt for the vast, untamed sea. But the price… the price was etched into her soul. A sacrifice, the Oracle had said, not of life, but of something infinitely more precious. A piece of herself. A memory, perhaps, or a cherished dream. The very essence of what made her *Althea*.

Fear, cold and sharp, pricked at her heart. It was a familiar companion, this fear of disappointing her father, of failing her kingdom, of the unknown that lay beyond the castle walls. But this was different. This was a fear intertwined with a fierce, protective love for Cris. The man, the god, the storm in her quiet life. His stoic face, etched with a pain she now understood ran deeper than any mortal wound, flashed before her eyes. The way his hand would tremble, almost imperceptibly, when he thought she wasn’t looking. The way his gaze, when it met hers, held a universe of unspoken longing and sorrow.
