The mission control room was a hive of hushed urgency, a stark contrast to the boisterous excitement of the launch. Red lights blinked ominously on consoles, casting a tense glow on the faces of the team. Outside, the Plastic Comet was a fiery streak against the darkening sky, a testament to human ingenuity and a potential salvation for a planet drowning in its own waste. But inside, the dream was teetering on the brink of disaster.

"Status report, Ben," Lena's voice, usually steady, held a tremor of strain. Her eyes were fixed on the main display, a swirling vortex of telemetry data that seemed to mock their efforts.

Ben Carter, his brow furrowed in concentration, tapped at his keyboard. "Re-entry trajectory nominal, Lena. Heat shield integrity at 98%. But… the internal temperature is fluctuating wildly. Way outside the predicted parameters." He paused, his gaze flicking to a secondary screen showing a graph that looked more like a seismograph during an earthquake. "The shredded plastic isn't reaching the optimal thermal range for conversion. It's either too hot, too fast, or not hot enough, too slow. We're not getting the oil yield we projected."
